Summary: Bourbon, boat, basement, bastard, boss. Each 'b' in his life had a beginning.

The first time he had some, he had picked the lock to his dad's liquor cabinet while he was gone on a hunting trip. He felt a heady rush as he hastily poured the amber liquid into a tall glass on the kitchen counter. He winced when a little sloshed over the edge. Making a note to clean up the evidence later, he carried the glass into the living room and leaned back in the easy chair his dad liked to watch the evening news in. He took a full swig and he soon found himself spitting out the bourbon.

He had started small. LJ, his dad's friend, was always working with wood. LJ had built the counters and shelves in the store and people from the town were always asking him to help fix or make something; a broken fence, a new table, a tree house. He didn't take much interest in what LJ did until his mom died. Since his dad spent all his time in the store after that, LJ started showing him how to make things with the wood. The first project he did on his own under LJ's watchful eyes was a small fishing boat.

Shannon had said it was creepy and wasn't sure if she wanted that room easily accessible with a baby on the way. He had taken one look and thought it was perfect. He loved to spend time with his wife and he was looking forward to spending time with their child. However, there were moments when he just wanted to be away from it; wanted his own space. He had walked through the empty room with its concrete floor and did some careful calculations. It would be perfect. He didn't care what anyone thought about his plans for the basement.

He wasn't sure what to think the first time he heard it. With Shannon, it had been so easy. They had loved each other with such ease. It was hard for him to show any kind of emotions, but Shannon and Kelly had drawn them out of him without batting an eyelash. After they were taken from him, he closed himself off from everyone around him. He wasn't sure what drove him to marry again; the red hair, the need for human contact. It wasn't love. And when she realized that, she slapped his face and called him a bastard.

When Mike left and he took over his first team, it was natural to be called what he had always called Mike. However, it didn't really mean anything to him. Then he met an annoying Baltimore detective who drove himself to the ground and still had a smile on his face afterwards. He had never picked someone for his team, but he found himself packing the kid off to FLETC with the promise of riding his ass hard when he got back. The first time he heard it from Anthony DiNozzo, he felt honored to have the title of boss.

Note: I wrote this after posting my NCIS Word Association poll and realizing how many B's are prominent in Gibbs' life. It's totally not avamclean's fault. ;-)

Bittersweet. The whole lot of'em.

And why don't I believe your little note? ;)

:-)

*innocent face*

My introspection on NCIS characters almost always goes bittersweet, even when I try to do funny. Look at the Ghostly Wake-Up Call one with Xander's ghost slapping Gibbs. It was meant to be funny and Gibbs went all angsty on me. Darn characters.

This is awesome. I never realized how many 'B's he has in his life. Of course, there is the "Bourbon, Boat, Basement" reference in the episode, but other than this ... great observation! I love this little fic. Very much!

I didn't realize the 'b' thing until last night and found it very interesting about the sheer number of b's in his life.

Glad you enjoyed!

I'm definitely writing more... I'm working on a four-part NCIS crossover story right now. :-)

Aw - this is lovely. I love that Tony is the first one to call him "boss". That's so great!

Actually, the way I intended it was that Gibbs was called boss but it didn't really mean anything until the first time Tony called him that.

The idea struck last night and I couldn't stop until it was done. I lucked into not saying the 'b' word for each drabble until the very last word.

Hey, I just noticed that! Okay, I went back and looked. Great non-planning!

I didn't have it on the first one originally, but I did through the 4th one and it just happened, so I went back and changed it for the first one and made I sure I did it on the last one. That last one was hard because I was conscious of what I was doing then.

I always call 'em 'happy accidents'.

Excellent!

I always sniffle a little whenever Shannon and Kelly are mentioned.

I couldn't resist some Shannon/Kelly time. You know that Shannon probably rolled her eyes when Gibbs said he was going to build a boat in their basement. But I picture her looking on from the top of the steps with a smile as Gibbs and Kelly worked on it.

Yes, I can picture that scene.

Thanks, you made me all sniffly again.

Darn cold weather. Yeah, weather.

Why don't I have a Gibbs/Shannon icon???? Or Gibbs/Shannon/Kelly?

I love your fics. A lot.

Unless another quickie like this strikes, my next one will be a gen NCIS/Highlander fic that I'm really excited about. And it will have bits of Shannon and Kelly in it since it will be centered on Gibbs and Tony.

Another lovely little piece. I love love love the image of little Jethro spitting out the bourbon. And, of course, the warmth and fuzziness of it *meaning* something to be called 'boss' by Tony...

Thanks!

I knew he was called boss before Tony came along (Stan "Steve" Burley), but I really wanted it to be Tony's 'boss' that mattered.

The whole time I was writing the bourbon one (all of 5-10 minutes), I was thinking about what Jackson Gibbs did when he found out his son picked the lock, drank some bourbon and spit it out all over the living room... I was thinking of your verse's response... :-)

Yeah... I think a certain wood-working project would be getting a bit of use after that! *g*

Definitely.

Then I wonder what happens in the future when Tony snuck in to Gibbs' basement one time and finished off his bourbon...

I think it would depend on Tony's motivation... that sounds more like attention-seeking than mischief, and depending on the context, he might need a hug more than anything else.

Very true... The question is, will he allow Gibbs to hug him?

Maybe a shared story that relates to what is bothering Tony that drove him to the bourbon in the basement. Gibbs can half talk. Tony can half listen. They can both grunt at the end in a manly way to acknowledge they understand each other.

But a hug would be so nice.

Very nice. Each one is wonderful on its own, but together, they're even better.

Thanks!

I really like doing these drabbles in groups. I can write a "story" quickly yet interconnect all the little ones to make a larger one. It's fun. It's how I did my largest story when I did 100 drabbles for challenge 100.

I couldn't resist when I made the connection with all the b's in his life.

Oh loved the look into what each 'B' means to Gibbs or how a specific 'B' plays into his life. A really unique way to look at Gibbs' character.

Thanks!

I had fun with this one. When I started thinking of the b's, I couldn't resist.
