Meme: Happy Day #5

DAY #5: Friday, April 17, 2009

Well, I have several things to be happy about today.

#1: I got a Dreamwidth invite at random. That said, I am playing around over there, but I don't intend to leave LJ or even make my posts here where people can't comment on LJ like some are doing. I'm quite content with my LJ, so I'll just consider DW something extra. I did the import a journal thingy and it worked for the most part. My icons didn't all go and the majority of them that didn't were my NCIS ones. :-( I still have to figure out if there's an easy way to post to both journals without doing a back and forth... Also, I don't have any invite codes to hand out. If I do get some, the first is slated for azraelz_angel because she has beta'ed my crap fics for several years and she listens to me go on and on about NCIS. Any others I get (if any) will be put up on my journal here as a first comment - first serve basis.

#2: I got my hair cut and colored and highlighted tonight. I decided to be edgy and post a picture of my new do. I played with some of the effects iPhoto has since I never had before and Photoshop is on my old computer and it doesn't have a web cam. Anyway, for those that are daring, you can look behind the cut for the picture. I'm quite happy with it.

Now I need to go find some dinner at 10pm! I didn't eat while I was out getting my red on...

What is with everyone going to dreamwidth these days? One day I've never heard of it, and in the next week a good dozen people are announcing they've gotten accounts. Where did this come from? I feel like I majorly missed something.

Dreamwidth is a project started by some fandom folks who also worked/volunteered (I can't remember which) for Livejournal. They're using the same base code, but making improvements. While it's not intended to be fandom only, it will be fandom friendly. Unlike Insane Journal and Greatest Journal, Dreamwidth is being handled like a business from the start, which bodes well for its long term survival.

One thing that will be *really* nice is that it will provide direct competition for LJ, which means LJ may well have to actually listen to its users on occasion or risk having them bail.

For many of us, we're not intending on leaving LJ. DW will have one button cross posting (they're still working on that - it's still in closed beta, after all), which will make maintaining a presence in both places easy.

I see it as 'in addition to' rather than 'instead of'.

Pretty much what tejas said. I first heard about it before it was even really out there. I have synecdochic friended for some of her SG1 fics and she is directly involved in the building process:

That's the post I originally learned about DW from. I know of some who are thinking of going there and just doing the cross post thing and not allowing comments on their LJ. Me, I'm happy in LJ and will be using DW as an add on to LJ. As long as the crossposting thing works, then I will be happy.

There isn't much over there yet and they are still working out bugs. It's slated to open to everyone on April 30th.

I wasn't actively keeping up with it. I saw synecdochic's posts from time to time and figured I would check it out eventually. I lucked into the early invite because I signed up for open ID over there to comment on someone else's journal. Then the site maintainers randomly selected open ID users who didn't have an account yet and sent out invites to those chosen.

So I'm going to play around and see if I can find any bugs. I'm sometimes good at that since I use a minority browser (Safari). Then I'll keep it up-to-date along with my LJ and let myself happily co-exist in both worlds.

You have such a lovely inner glow! :-)

Hee!

I opened up the edit features in iPhoto and just started clicking things and sliding sliders. I really need to get a version of Photoshop to install on my new computer for those times when I just don't feel like having two keyboards and two mice sitting in front of me. I did that the other night to make the 'red haired Tony' icon from my manip and I kept using the wrong keyboard/mouse for which computer I was wanting to do something on. It was getting annoying. :-)

That inner glow also distracted people from seeing the mess that is the bedroom behind me. That an my nice little crop job I did on it. Nobody need know about the piles and piles of laundry I need to put away some day.

I know about those kinds of piles. Sometimes they seem to just migrate back and forth from the washing machine since they turn into cat beds at some point in their life cycle.

The cats are usually grateful for the clean bedding.

And I still can't find my favorite blue shirt. It's in there somewhere. :-)

Blue shirt?

Hmm... um... green shirt. check. red shirt. check. bad kitty pajama pants. check... here blue shirt! here boy! *whistles*

:-)

OOO! There it is. All clean and in the clothes basket.

I don't have a kitty here :-( The apartment doesn't allow them, but whenever I'm visiting my parents, the kitties are there waiting for that 'fresh from the dryer' pile of clothes. We did have one cat that liked the dirty clothes... that one never figured out the differences. Either that or it liked getting high on the smells on my dad's outside work clothes. :-)

It was the smells. They love the scent of their favorite humans. Or, they want completely clean. I've never been able to pin down if it's a mood thing or what. :-)

That's the thing though... if it had been my clothes or my mom's clothes, yes. But this particular cat *hated* my dad. We assume it was because my dad was the one that rescued him and his sister when they were just little kittens from the chemical plant he worked at. We think they resented him after that because he's the one that took them away from their mommy.

But anyway, he would avoid my dad with a ten-foot pole, but put some dirty, smelly clothes in the bathroom and he was all there.

The other ones all go for clean clothes. Hands down.

And we had one that liked to crawl into the washer and/or dryer if the door was left open.

Maybe it was a dominance thing, then. Or the scent of his clothes reminded him of 'home'.

Or he was just weird and messing with your head. :-)

Or he was just weird and messing with your head.

I think it was that one. We still think both of them got into some chemicals at that plant before my dad rescued them. Probably didn't help that I named him Abu after Aladdin's monkey.

Of course, had we gotten them a few months later, they would have been Simba and Nala.
