Tara looked up and down the long dusty road. There was nothing in sight, not for miles. She collapsed to the ground and pulled her tattered bag in close. The tears began to fall. For the first time, she felt free and that feeling scared her to death.
It had taken every ounce of courage she had to put her plan into action. Secretly gathering any loose change she could find. Saving canned food that wouldn’t be missed. Watching over her shoulder for any sign that her family would notice her actions. She choked back a sob. Her family. That word held no meaning to her anymore. Her family had been her mother, but she was gone now. Now it was only Tara and she was all alone in the world.
She didn’t know how long she sat on the dusty roadside, but the tears finally dried up. She was left empty with no idea what to do next. Then she heard the low rumble of a car in the distance. Panic set in. What if it was her brothers, or even worse, her father? They would punish her if they caught her. She couldn’t…
Scrambling, her heart thumping, she grabbed her bags and prepared to run from the road into the great expanse of countryside. But time had worked against her, the black car was pulling to a stop beside her.
“Need a lift?” A confident male voice carried out of the car, mixed with tones of some eighties rock music.
It wasn’t her kin. They hadn’t found her. Hope swelled up in Tara’s chest. But, could she trust this unknown man? Any man she had ever met treated her like garbage.
“Uh- uh, if,” she couldn’t control her stuttering. “If, yo-you don’t mind. I don-don’t have much mon-money though.”
The man’s eyes softened as he took in her appearance. “That’s okay, I’m not exactly rolling in it myself. Come on, I’ll give you a ride. Dean by the way.”
Tara gingerly took the offered hand as she stepped into the black Impala. “Ta-Tara.”
Dean kept casting quick glances at the young girl as he started back down the road. At first he thought she was maybe 16 at best, but now that she seemed to be calming down, he would pin her at 18 or 19. How could such a pretty girl end up in this kind of state?
“So,” Dean decided to open the conversation, “where yah heading to?”
Tara looked into his eyes and then quickly diverted her glance downward. “Cali-California. I- I have a scholarship t-to UC Sunnydale.”
“You’re in luck then. I’m heading to California myself,” Dean sent a reassuring smile to the shy girl. “You’re welcome to ride.”
“I- I don’t want to be a both-bother,” Tara’s heart clenched. She might make it after all.
“Ok-Okay. Th-Thank you,” Tara felt the weight lift off her chest. “Why are yo-you going to Cali-California?”
“Got a brother to see.”
